India voiced its opposition on Friday to unilateral actions aimed at altering the status quo by force in the South China Sea. This statement comes in the midst of escalating tensions between China and the Philippines following a clash between their maritime security forces in the region.
According to Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, India has consistently underscored the importance of adhering to international law, respecting the rules-based order, and peacefully resolving disputes. Jaiswal emphasized the necessity of avoiding any actions that could lead to destabilization in the region.
India has reiterated its longstanding position that disputes should be resolved through peaceful means. Jaiswal emphasized India’s opposition to actions that seek to change the status quo through force or coercion, emphasizing the need for peaceful dispute settlement instead.
The South China Sea is of great importance due to its vast hydrocarbon reserves, and China’s broad sovereignty claims over the region have sparked global concerns. Several countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines, and Brunei, have competing claims in the area.
India, along with other democratic nations, has advocated for the peaceful resolution of disputes and urged adherence to international law, particularly the UNCLOS (UN Convention on the Law of the Sea).
In response to the escalating tensions, Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, engaged in discussions with his Filipino counterpart, Eduardo M Ano. Sullivan reiterated the United States’ unwavering commitment to the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty and expressed shared concerns over China’s actions in the South China Sea.
The White House issued a statement reaffirming the US commitment to the defense treaty, extending it to include armed attacks on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft in the South China Sea.
It is imperative for nations to collaborate to ensure stability and peace in the region. India’s stance on the South China Sea disputes reflects its dedication to upholding international law and promoting peaceful conflict resolution.
