The Return of Philippine Football League Training Signals Hope for the 2020 Season

The Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) has granted approval for the Philippines Football League (PFL) clubs to recommence training, marking a significant milestone towards the highly anticipated commencement of the PFL Season 2020. This authorization follows a favorable recommendation from the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), indicating a promising development for football enthusiasts in the country.

PFF president Mariano Araneta, Jr. conveyed the exhilarating news and emphasized the ongoing support from league sponsor, Qatar Airways. The airline has demonstrated its dedication to the PFL by already disbursing 50% of its sponsorship for 2020. The collaboration between PFF and Qatar Airways, established in January 2020, has facilitated the airline’s role as the Title Sponsor and Official Airline Partner of PFL.

Atty. Edwin Gastanes, the general secretary of PFF, announced that the league will now be officially recognized as “The Philippines Football League brought to you by Qatar Airways.” He also highlighted Qatar Airways’ unwavering support for the upcoming season, underscoring their commitment to the growth and development of football in the Philippines.

In anticipation of the clubs’ return to training, the PFF conducted an RT-PCR/swab test at the PFF House of Football in Pasig City for both PFF staff and PFL clubs. This crucial measure is in line with PFF’s Operations Protocols for the PFL and ensures the safety and well-being of all involved parties.

The PFF-owned National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite has been designated as the primary training venue for the clubs. However, PFF remains open to acknowledging alternative training venues, provided that they adhere to the established protocols for training grounds. Clubs are encouraged to inform PFF of their proposed training venue for assessment and approval.

As the PFL prepares for the upcoming season, the dynamic nature of the league has necessitated ongoing adjustments to the tournament regulations. The initial double round-robin format will be modified to a single round-robin tournament to accommodate the 2020 league season within the football calendar.

PFL Commissioner Coco Torre affirmed his commitment to elevating the league’s profile and outlined strategic plans for long-term growth. Recognizing the need for a more competitive and compelling league, Torre emphasized the importance of increasing the number of clubs to enhance league stability and foster greater interest and investment in the sport.

The resumption of PFL training and the steadfast support from Qatar Airways signify a ray of hope for football enthusiasts as the league undertakes vital preparations for an exciting and promising 2020 season. With these developments, the Philippine Football Federation is poised to lead the charge in advancing the sport and engaging the nation’s football community.
