The Ministry of Transportation in Indonesia has officially declared the light rail transit (LRT) train connecting Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi (Jabodebek) regions as a national vital object. This announcement was formalized through a decree issued by the Directorate General of Railway on January 8, 2024.
According to Mahendro Trang Bawono, the Public Relations Manager of the Jabodebek LRT, the process of designating the train system as a national vital object commenced in October 2023 and culminated in its official recognition earlier this year. The rigorous stages involved in the declaration process included document verification, deliberation, and field verification with the involvement of pertinent stakeholders such as the Transportation Ministry’s Railway Safety Directorate and National Police (Polri).
Bawono emphasized that the Jabodebek LRT holds significance beyond being a mere mode of transportation for its passengers, as it also contributes to the social, economic, and cultural development of Indonesia. Recognized for its modern technology and efficient travel services, the LRT system has been deemed a critical asset of the country, necessitating the guarantee of its security and safety while serving the public.
Furthermore, the declaration of the Jabodebek LRT as a national vital object entails the implementation of comprehensive security measures to maintain the integrity of its services, in adherence to laws related to rail transport and guidelines for the security of national vital objects.
In addition, Bawono called upon the public to actively engage in the preservation and protection of the Jabodebek LRT by abstaining from vandalism and promptly reporting any potential security risks that could disrupt the operations of the train system.
In related news, the Jabodebek LRT has experienced significant success since its inauguration in August 2023, having already served more than 10 million passengers, thus marking a milestone within a relatively short period of operation.
The recognition of the Jabodebek LRT as a national vital object underscores its pivotal role in Indonesia’s infrastructure and transportation sector, signifying a significant step toward ensuring its seamless and secure operation.
