The Republic of Indonesia’s highly anticipated presidential race has concluded with the formal declaration of Prabowo Subianto as the president-elect by the General Election Commission on Wednesday. Following the rejection of appeals by two losing presidential candidates challenging Subianto’s landslide victory, this declaration solidifies the outcome of the election.
Prabowo Subianto, the current defense minister of Indonesia, garnered 58.6% of the votes, surpassing 96 million ballots, more than double the number received by his opponents. Security measures were heightened leading up to the declaration ceremony, with over 4,200 police and soldiers deployed and routes to the event venue sealed off.
Arriving at the General Election Commission compound in coordinated long-sleeved white shirts, Prabowo Subianto and his running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, were warmly received by their supporters. Addressing a gathering of political leaders, including rival candidate Anies Baswedan and his running mate Muhaimin Iskandar, Subianto emphasized the importance of collaboration and unity for the nation’s welfare.
The formal declaration of Subianto’s victory during this occasion echoed the previous certification of the election results on March 20th. The declaration ceremony had faced temporary delays due to legal disputes from losing candidates Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who sought to annul the results and demand a revote, alleging large-scale fraud and nepotism in Subianto’s candidacy.
Specifically contested was the candidacy of outgoing President Joko Widodo’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as Subianto’s running mate, citing that Raka, at 37 years old, was two years below the minimum age requirement for the position. Raka had been granted an exception to this requirement by the Constitutional Court, prompting controversy and the resignation of the court’s chief justice.
The Constitutional Court ultimately upheld Subianto’s victory and dismissed the allegations put forth by the losing candidates. With the court’s verdict being final with no possibility of appeal, Baswedan and Pranowo conceded and extended their congratulations to Subianto and Raka, paving the way for a peaceful transfer of power and solidifying the future of Indonesian democracy.
