Philippine Men’s Football Team Defeated by Malaysia in Merdeka Cup

The Philippine men’s national football team suffered a disappointing defeat to host Malaysia, losing 2-1 in the Merdeka Cup held at Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. The match saw the Philippines take an early lead when Jefferson Tabinas scored in the 27th minute, as his cross was diverted into the net by a Malaysian defender. However, the Philippines could not maintain their advantage and were ultimately relegated to the third-place battle.

As the match progressed, contentious moments arose, particularly for the Philippine squad, who felt aggrieved by two critical non-calls that could have resulted in penalties. Notably, in the 85th minute, Sandro Reyes was allegedly fouled within the penalty area, leading to his receiving a yellow card for unsporting behavior after expressing his frustration to the referee.

Malaysia responded with an equalizing goal in the 43rd minute, courtesy of a direct shot by Mohammad Syamer Bin Kutty Abba from just outside the penalty area. The host team then took the lead in the 73rd minute, when substitute Muhammad Safawi Bin Rasid successfully converted a penalty kick after Matthew Baldisimo committed a foul against Mohd Afiq Bin Fazail.

Following this match, the Philippines will prepare to face Tajikistan in the third-place playoff on Sunday, with Tajikistan having previously been defeated by Lebanon with a score of 1-0. This match comes on the heels of a significant transition within the coaching staff, as head coach Tom Saintfiet recently departed to take a similar position with Mali. In his absence, assistant coach Norman Fegidero stepped in as interim head coach, supported by the coaching staff of the women’s football team, led by Mark Torcaso, who also joined the training camp in Malaysia.
