FC Meralco Manila Announces Immediate Withdrawal from the Philippines Football League

FC Meralco Manila, a prominent team in the Philippines Football League, has officially announced its withdrawal from the league, effective immediately. The club, initially established as Loyola Agila Football Club in 2006, conveyed this unfortunate news through their official Facebook page on Monday.

The decision to cease operations stems primarily from difficulties in securing financial sponsorship and managing operational costs. In their official statement, the club expressed deep regret regarding their inability to continue, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce that the club will be ceasing operations immediately and will no longer participate in the second season of the Philippines Football League.”

The management further elaborated that efforts to attract new investors and sustain the organization were ultimately unsuccessful, leading to this regrettable outcome. They extended their heartfelt apologies to their fans for this difficult situation and expressed gratitude for the unwavering support received over the past seven years. Additionally, the club recognized the contributions of their sponsors, specifically Jollibee and Mizuno, and acknowledged the City of Manila for serving as their home base.

Historically, FC Meralco Manila, known as Loyola Meralco Sparks following the acquisition by Manila Electric Company in 2011, has made significant strides in Philippine football, having clinched the United Football League title in 2013 and the PFF National Club Championship in 2014. Their exit from the league marks a poignant chapter in the club’s rich legacy and raises questions about the future of football in the Philippines.
