The Philippine Football Federation has appointed Norman Fegidero as the interim head coach for the Philippine Men’s National Football Team, following the unexpected resignation of Tom Saintfiet. This decision was confirmed by Freddy Gonzales, the Director of Senior National Teams, on August 29, 2023.
Mr. Fegidero, who is set to lead the team during the upcoming Merdeka Cup, will be supported by an experienced coaching staff. Notably, Mark Torcaso, the head coach of the Philippine Women’s National Team, will join the staff along with Andrew Durante, Sinisha Cohadzic, and Garrath McPherson. This strategic selection aims to ensure continuity and stability within the team during this transition.
The recent developments have led to disappointment within the federation regarding the sudden departure of Mr. Saintfiet, who had a long-term contract with the team. Mr. Gonzales expressed regret about Mr. Saintfiet’s decision to pursue the coaching opportunity with Mali just prior to the team’s departure for the Merdeka Cup. He emphasized the importance of commitment, stating, “I have no interest in holding on to anyone who is not fully committed to the Philippines and our goals.”
In light of this situation, Mr. Gonzales has stated the urgent need to find a permanent head coach who is dedicated to the success of the team. He reiterated that the pursuit of a coach who understands the importance of being “all in” for the team is of utmost priority.
As the Philippine Men’s National Football Team prepares to commence their campaign against host Malaysia on September 4, 2023, the federation and coaching staff aim to unify their efforts towards a successful tournament outcome, fostering a collective commitment to the team’s aspirations.
In conclusion, the appointment of Mr. Fegidero as interim head coach reflects the federation’s attempt to navigate the recent coaching upheaval while maintaining a focus on developing a cohesive and dedicated team strategy ahead of upcoming challenges.
