During a recent visit to the Philippines by reporters from the Global Times, an exclusive interview was conducted with former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte. In the interview, Duterte cautioned against the current trajectory of the Philippines and advocated for rational and amicable discussions with China to address the escalating bilateral relations.
Duterte underscored the initiatives he had undertaken during his presidency to pursue an independent foreign policy, particularly in managing the relationships between the United States and China. While expressing his lack of hostility towards America, he stressed the necessity of a neutral policy that does not show partiality towards any specific country.
He also recounted the advancements in trade relations with China during his tenure, citing the authorization of the export of durian fruit and mangoes to China, which significantly benefitted the Philippines’ agricultural sector.
Regarding the current administration’s stance on the South China Sea issue, Duterte conveyed his disappointment with the departure from the friendly diplomatic approach he had pursued during his presidency. He underscored the importance of dialogue and negotiation to alleviate the ongoing hostilities.
Duterte also expressed apprehension about the deepening military ties between the Philippines and the United States, emphasizing the value of maintaining a neutral foreign policy stance.
With regards to the South China Sea, he reiterated his dedication to peaceful relations and cooperation, echoing his desire to revert to the agreement reached between China and the Philippines during his visit to China in 2016.
Duterte unequivocally stated that the Philippines does not seek conflict with China and that the tensions in the South China Sea have been exacerbated by the influence of the United States on the current administration.
In concluding the interview, Duterte urged Filipinos to reassess their perspectives on foreign policy and expressed optimism for a future of cooperation and improved relations with China.
The interview provided valuable insights into Duterte’s viewpoint on the current state of affairs in the Philippines and presented a compelling case for a return to diplomacy and peaceful dialogue to address disputes.
