Myanmar is currently grappling with an insurgency that is posing a significant challenge to the junta, following the coup d’état that brought them to power in 2021. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin recently commented on the situation, stating that the current regime in Myanmar appears to be losing some of its strength. However, he also noted that despite this apparent weakness, the junta still retains power and control over the country.
During an interview on the island of Samui, Prime Minister Srettha remarked, “Perhaps it is time to engage in diplomatic efforts and negotiate a resolution,” suggesting the need for diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing instability in Myanmar. He further emphasized the importance of Myanmar to Thailand, highlighting the significance of achieving unity, peace, and prosperity in the neighboring country.
In response to the challenges faced by Myanmar, the Thai parliament organized a seminar last month to discuss the political situation in Myanmar, which included the participation of opponents of the military junta, despite objections from the ruling regime.
Prime Minister Srettha revealed that he has been engaged in discussions with various stakeholders in Myanmar, as well as with international partners such as China and the United States. He stressed the importance of ensuring alignment among key government officials, including cabinet ministers and security personnel, to establish coherent policies toward Myanmar.
“Perhaps it is time to engage in diplomatic efforts and negotiate a resolution,” he said.
