Tambora sub-district in Jakarta has been under scrutiny for its status as one of the regions with the highest number of online gambling participants in Indonesia. According to the subdistrict head Holi Susanto, supervising the residents’ activities has proven to be quite challenging due to the utilization of regular cellphones for online gambling, unlike traditional gambling activities that were easier to detect in the past.
Holi Susanto has attributed the high number of online gambling participants in Tambora to the densely populated area. He explicated that what commences as a harmless endeavor in gambling for some individuals eventually escalates into an addiction. The allure of winning and the excitement of the game can swiftly lead to a downward spiral of addiction.
In response to the mounting predicament of online gambling, Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono has instructed all local authorities to crack down on online gambling in their respective areas. Measures have been taken in Tambora, such as educational outreach to the public to raise awareness about the adverse impacts of online gambling. Various community officers and organizations have been mobilized to disseminate the message and discourage the practice of online gambling.
Furthermore, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto divulged distressing statistics related to online gambling in Jakarta. South Bogor District topped the list with 3,720 participants and transactions amounting to Rp349 billion, while Tambora District ranked second with 7,916 participants and online gambling transactions totaling IDR 196 billion.
These findings bring attention to the pressing need to address the issue of online gambling and its harmful effects on communities. It is evident that online gambling has permeated various strata of society, necessitating the collaboration of local leaders and authorities to eliminate this problem.
In addition to Tambora, other districts and cities in Indonesia have also struggled with the proliferation of online gambling. The findings raise concerns about the prevalence of online gambling in various regions and the urgent need to address this issue.
