The fishermen of Masinloc town in Zambales province, Philippines recently encountered Chinese vessels while fishing in the South China Sea. According to Leonardo Cuaresma, the president of the New Masinloc Fisherman’s Association, Chinese patrols have heightened ever since Beijing enacted its anti-trespassing law.
Despite the prevalent tensions, the Filipino fishermen have managed to avoid detainment, which they attribute to “God’s grace”. Cuaresma shared that the fishermen continue their work, but exercise extra caution due to the increased presence of Chinese patrols, particularly around Scarborough Shoal.
The leader of the fishermen emphasized the necessity for caution and reminded them to be extremely vigilant while at sea. Additionally, with an increasing number of fishermen engaging in deep-sea fishing, the presence of Chinese patrols within the West Philippine Sea has created a challenging environment for Filipino fishermen.
Furthermore, experts have observed heightened Chinese patrols near the Philippines’ territorial waters, including areas within the country’s exclusive economic zone. According to Joshua Espena, vice-president of the International Development and Security Cooperation think tank, China is testing the Philippines’ newly introduced Comprehensive Archipelagic Defence Concept by pushing the boundaries to instigate the nation.
In response to the escalating tensions, Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo expressed the country’s commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution to the dispute through international law and diplomacy. Manalo assured that the incidents occurring in the area would not compromise the promotion of the country’s sovereignty and rights in the West Philippine Sea.
Despite the challenges, Cuaresma and his fellow fishermen have expressed their trust in the Philippine authorities to protect them. They have received reassurance from officials, including Philippine Navy Inspector General Commodore Roy Vincent Trinidad, who promised to continue to watch over the fishermen and provide support.
As the situation continues to unfold, the Filipino fishermen remain resilient in the face of adversity, continuing their work amidst the challenges posed by the presence of Chinese patrols in the South China Sea.
