Farewell to a Legendary Politician and Academic: Syed Husin Ali’s Legacy

Syed Husin Ali will be remembered for his leadership of Parti Sosialis Rakyat Malaysia, later renamed Parti Rakyat Malaysia after shedding its socialist label. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the present-day PKR, resulting from the merger of PRM and Parti Keadilan Nasional. Alongside his political pursuits, he made significant contributions to sociological and political discourse in Malaysia, particularly in relation to devising economic solutions to poverty. His seminal work, “The Malays”, remains a fundamental reference in the field.

In addition to his academic endeavors, Syed Husin’s autobiography, “Two Faces”, offered the Malaysian public an intimate insight into his unjust detention under the ISA, shedding light on the oppressive tactics employed by the authorities to suppress dissent.
