In response to inquiries from the Singaporean media outlet CNA, both Sport Singapore (SportSG) and Commonwealth Games Singapore (CGS) announced this week that the city-state has opted not to submit a bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. This decision comes after Malaysia also declined the opportunity to host the quadrennial multi-sport event.
The announcement from SportSG and CGS follows a period of assessment subsequent to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) inviting all member associations, including Singapore, to express their interest in hosting the 2026 edition. This invitation was extended during the general assembly last November, which took place in Singapore. The assembly was convened four months after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as hosts of the 2026 Games due to projected cost overruns.
The decision not to pursue the hosting of the Commonwealth Games comes as a result of a feasibility study conducted by SportSG and CGS. When asked about the reasoning behind the decision, representatives from the organizations highlighted the significant consideration and careful evaluation that were undertaken before reaching this conclusion.
