Encouraging the Use of Public Transportation to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

During his recent visit to Jakarta, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi strongly encouraged the public to utilize mass transportation to address the city’s persistent traffic congestion and pollution issues. Minister Sumadi meticulously inspected the city’s public transportation facilities, with a specific focus on the bus rapid transit TransJakarta.

Throughout his inspection, Minister Sumadi underscored the significance of dependable and comfortable transportation services for the public. He underscored the shared responsibility to ensure public access to such services, emphasizing the importance of promoting mass transportation to alleviate Jakarta’s traffic and pollution concerns.

A notable highlight of Minister Sumadi’s visit was his observation of the numerous electric buses now in operation throughout Jakarta. The utilization of electric buses signifies a significant advancement in the city’s endeavors to provide sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation options for its residents.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the Jakarta Provincial Government annually allocates a substantial amount of funding – totaling Rp4.3 trillion or approximately US$264 million – to subsidize public transportation. This financial support aims to enhance the quality of public transportation services and further encourage public utilization as an alternative to private vehicles.

Moreover, Minister Sumadi stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and reliability of public transportation, particularly through optimizing facilities like TransJakarta and the Jakarta mass rapid transit (MRT). He emphasized the imperative for mayors across Indonesia to acknowledge the government’s responsibility in combating traffic congestion and pollution through the promotion of mass transportation use.

As part of his assessment, Minister Sumadi conducted spontaneous checks on bus drivers and the roadworthiness of tourism buses in the vicinity of Ragunan Zoo, exemplifying the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of public transportation passengers.

In conclusion, Minister Sumadi’s call to action serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to address the challenges associated with urban transportation. By enhancing the quality and accessibility of public transportation services, Jakarta can progress towards a more sustainable and efficient urban transportation system.
